Francis Upritchard

at Anton Kern Gallery,

532 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011

In "War Dance," her solo New York gallery debut, New Zealand-born, London-based Francis Upritchard shows half life-size figural sculptures that are simultaneously creepy and endearing. Drawing on medieval sources including the Bayeux tapestry, Upritchard has created a cast of characters dressed in what seem like fencing outfits and all engaged in a weird ritual dance. With their half-closed eyes, they seem to be in a trance; their faces are at once infantile and wizened.
