Art In America

“Here and Elsewhere”

at New Museum,
235 Bowery

As rockets fly again in the Middle East, the New Museum opens an exhibition devoted to "contemporary art from and about the Arab world." Including works by upward of 45 artists from more than 15 countries, the show has a roster that includes some familiar names (Etel Adnan, Wael Shawky, Akram Zaatari) but also many that will be new to Western audiences. Modes range widely, from documentary video and photography to abstract painting and found-object sculpture; the emotional register spans from satire to outrage.
