Matthew Barney's latest film, the five-hour River of Fundament, will have its world premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music Feb. 12-16. Created in collaboration with musician Jonathan Bepler, the film is based on Norman Mailer's 1983 novel Ancient Evenings.

Press materials describe the film, produced by Barney and the Basel-based Laurenz Foundation, as "fusing narrative cinema, sculpture and opera as they reconstruct this hypersexual story of Egyptian gods and the seven stages of death." Pretty standard Barney stuff.

The film's cast includes Paul Giamatti, Ellen Burstyn, Elaine Stritch, Maggie Gyllenhaal and one of Mailer's sons, John Buffalo Mailer.
