The State Hermitage Museum.

The Manifesta Foundation has announced the artist list for Manifesta 10, the next iteration of the roving European contemporary art biennial. Curated by Kasper König, the exhibition is slated to take place this summer at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg (June 28-Oct. 31), despite calls to relocate the exhibition due to Russia's recent passage of laws widely seen as anti-gay and the country's annexation of the Crimean Peninsula.

The roster is studded with historical figures, such as Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Henri Matisse, and also includes heavy hitters like Thomas Hirschhorn and younger artists like Klara Liden. Participants will contribute over 35 newly commissioned artworks and projects in addition to existing pieces.

"In response to the comments I have received regarding the current geopolitical circumstances," König said in a statement to the press, "I would like to stress that obviously I am very concerned with the escalating crisis, and because of it I do believe it is
and should be our goal to continue to make Manifesta 10 happen." The Berlin-based König, 70, is co-founder of the Münster Sculpture Project and a veteran museum director, having served as founding director of Portikus, Frankfurt am Main (1988-2000) and Museum Ludwig, Cologne (2000-2012).
