The New York-based Joan Mitchell Foundation, which gives annual grants to painters and sculptors, has been particularly active in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, providing over $2 million in financial support to individuals and arts organizations. In 2008 it introduced its Career Opportunity Grants for artists and community-based art projects. Earlier this year, the foundation sponsored three concurrent exhibitions of Mitchell’s work—at the Contemporary Arts Center, the New Orleans Museum of Art and Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University—and organized a two-part symposium. Now it is markedly stepping up its presence in the city with the purchase of a house on the edge of the Tremé district for the creation of an artists’ residency program, slated to begin in 2011. Details are still being worked out as the foundation launches a search for a program director.
