The Man Behind The Curtain
Founded in 2003, Mission 17 is a recent addition to San Francisco's large population of not-for-profit visual art spaces. Nevertheless it will close its doors this summer, a casualty of the economy. In the meantime, the organization's penultimate offering is a tidy grouping of three projects, "The Man Behind the Curtain", organized by assistant director and curator Laura Mott as her first and last exhibition after a year of work for the organization. It's a premature ending for the space and for Mott, depriving the city of subsequent exhibitions as complex and compelling as this one.Read More
SFMOMA's SECA Awards Show: Trevor Paglen, Jordan Kantor, Tauba Auerbach, and Desiree Holman
Independent curator and writer Joseph del Pesco visits SFMOMA's biyearly exhibition of local talent, funded and facilitated by The Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art (SECA). and featuring artists Tauba Auerbach, Desirée Holman, Jordan Kantor, and Trevor Paglen. Through May 10th, 2009.In part because of the intellectual depth of work by academic artists like Paglen and Kantor, for this year's SECA exhibition the curators have taken particular care to build a discursive scaffolding around the exhibition, both in the gallery with a reading area, and in a full-color publication that includes a tense interview-style conversation with the artists-probing topics like representation, democracy and uncertainty. Curators Apsara DiQuinzio and Alison Gass also hosted MIT scholar and writer Caroline Jones, who delivered a densely academic lecture, in an effort to saturate the works with meaning and to underscore the artists' shared consideration of media issues and systems-thinking.
