Paddle8 Auction Offers Celebrity-Themed Works

It's been exactly one week since Paddle8's "Somebody" auction launched online, with 39 works on offer, all by or about celebrities. Keeping up with Anthony Elms at Independent

Fresh off the train from Philadelphia, braving blustery winds and wet, sideways snow, Anthony Elms met A.i.A. in the lobby of the former Dia building in Chelsea for a walkthrough of the Independent art fair. Now in its fourth year, Independent distinguishes itself from the other March fairs with its relatively small roster (40-odd galleries and nonprofits compared with the Armory Show's 200+), a freewheeling, experimental spirit, and an open, cubicle-free layout, this year thanks to architect Christian Wassmann.

National Academy Welcomes New Mediums

For the first time in its 187-year history, the National Academy has included photographers and video and performance artists among its annual nominees, to be formally inducted this evening. Until 2011, only those falling under the painting, sculpture, printmaking and architecture umbrella were eligible to be voted into the Academy.
