Keeping up with Anthony Elms at Independent

Fresh off the train from Philadelphia, braving blustery winds and wet, sideways snow, Anthony Elms met A.i.A. in the lobby of the former Dia building in Chelsea for a walkthrough of the Independent art fair. Now in its fourth year, Independent distinguishes itself from the other March fairs with its relatively small roster (40-odd galleries and nonprofits compared with the Armory Show's 200+), a freewheeling, experimental spirit, and an open, cubicle-free layout, this year thanks to architect Christian Wassmann.

National Academy Welcomes New Mediums

For the first time in its 187-year history, the National Academy has included photographers and video and performance artists among its annual nominees, to be formally inducted this evening. Until 2011, only those falling under the painting, sculpture, printmaking and architecture umbrella were eligible to be voted into the Academy.

Gartenfeld to MOCA North Miami as Curator

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami has hired New York-based independent curator, writer and editor Alex Gartenfeld in the newly created position of curator. Gartenfeld is currently senior editor of A.i.A. and Interview magazine online. He will assume his new post in May, reporting to Bonnie Clearwater, who, in addition to being the museum's director, also serves as chief curator. Read More

Miami Art Museum Receives Major Donation

When the Miami Art Museum reopens as the Pérez Art Museum Miami in December, it will do so with at least 300 additions to its collection. The museum became a collecting institution in 1996 and has since focused on international contemporary art with a spotlight on the Americas. The Scholls have been building their collection for more than three decades; it spans works from the past 50 years, with an emphasis on work created since 1990.
