Mike Kelley Goes to Milan during Venice Biennale

An exhibition of works by Mike Kelley will take place in Milan this summer, timed to coincide with the Venice Biennale-an exhibition in which Kelley participated twice (in 1988 and 1995). HangarBicocca, a 42,000-square-foot industrial site turned exhibition space, will host the show, which is organized by HangarBicocca curator Andrea Lissoni and the artist's ex-girlfriend, L.A.-based independent curator Emi Fontana. Read More

Toyo Ito Wins 2013 Pritzker Prize

Japanese architect Toyo Ito was named the 2013 Pritzker Prize winner Friday. Known for combining exacting engineering with an esthetic that melds interiors with their outdoor surroundings, the Tokyo-based architect will accept his award, along with a $100,000 check, in a ceremony at Boston's John F. Kennedy Presidential Library on May 29th. Read More

Younger Set Achieve Record Results at Christie's

Christie's New York's First Open sale of postwar and contemporary art took place at the auction house's Rockefeller Center headquarters today. Sales were brisk, with 239 of the 297 lots finding buyers. The sale totaled $12.4 million including buyer's premium, setting a record for First Open sales. The sale raised over $830,000 for Artists Space and just over $500,000 for the Brooklyn Museum. Read More

Jack Shainman Expands, in Chelsea and Upstate

New York's Jack Shainman Gallery will expand to 32,000 square feet of new exhibition space by adding two satellite venues. Joining its flagship location at 513 West 20th Street, the gallery will soon include a new Chelsea venue at 524 West 24th Street and an old schoolhouse in Kinderhook, N.Y., two hours north of Manhattan. Read More

Dismissed El Museo Director Files Discrimination Suit

El Museo del Barrio and its former director, Margarita Aguilar, are embroiled in a legal battle that involves New York State human rights officials. Aguilar, who was terminated from her position on Feb. 14th, claims she was wrongfully dismissed, saying to the New York Times, "This is beyond belief . . . I was doing my duties from the moment I stepped in to the moment I left." In the termination letter, El Museo lists numerous reasons for Aguilar's termination, including insufficient fundraising, ineffective leadership and dereliction of duty, as reported in the Times.
