One Book Takes on Creativity

What compels a person to become an artist, actor or singer, and to make the financial and comfort sacrifices that so often precede success, or accompany failure? A new book offers myriad, unscientific answers. The Art Life: On Creativity and Career is "as much curated as written," says author Stuart Horodner, artistic director of the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, which is publishing the 200-page book with funding from the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation. It will hit bookstores in February (distributed by D.A.P.).

Jose Roca Appointed Adjunct Curator at the Tate

In its effort to broaden the geographic scope of its collection, London's Tate has appointed Colombian curator José Roca (b.1962) as adjunct curator of Latin American art. Based in Bogotá, the 49-year-old will work with the Tate for a three-year period.

Steve Cohen Joins LA MOCA Board

Hedge-fund manager Steven A. Cohen has been elected to the 45-member board of trustees of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.

Chairman and CEO of S.A.C. Capital Advisors, based in Stamford, Conn., Cohen was estimated by Forbes last year to be worth &9.3 billion, making him the 35th richest person in America. The 55-year-old is a major collector of modern and contemporary art with his wife, Alexandra. The couple has widely supported American museums and exhibitions, including MOCA's own "Robert Rauschenberg: Combines" and  "© MURAKAMI," as well as the recent de Kooning retrospective at New York's MoMA, where he sits on the Painting and Sculpture Committee, and "HIDE/SEEK: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture," now at the Brooklyn Museum. He is also a director of the Robin Hood Foundation and a trustee of Brown University.

John McWhinnie, 1968-2012

John McWhinnie, a rare-book and art dealer in New York, was killed in a snorkeling accident on Jan. 6 in the British Virgin Islands. The 43-year-old and his wife, Maria Beaulieu, were caught in a riptide and pulled out to sea. She was rescued.

LA Artists Will Take Over Historic Greystone Mansion

On Jan. 28, one party in Los Angeles will host new works by 25 artists, with David Lamelas acting as emcee. Mungo Thomson will work with a composer and musicians to simulate the sound of crickets. Glenn Kaino will stage a secret happening, and Llyn Foulkes will play his large sculptural machine that combines various musical instruments.
 
Thrown in conjunction with the ongoing, region-wide Pacific Standard Time exhibition initiative in Los Angeles, Ball of Artists is an aural and visual extravaganza that will mark the closing of PST's performance program (Jan. 19-29). The event is organized by Lauri Firstenberg, director and cofounder of the nonprofit venue LAX Art (say it like the airport), and producer and collector Richard Massey, who staged the first Ball in 2007 during Art Basel Miami Beach.
