Kusama Leaves Gagosian, Joins David Zwirner

Rumors of Yayoi Kusama leaving the Gagosian Gallery to join the Zwirner empire are now confirmed. In the third departure from the Gagosian stable in two months, Kusama announced that "after five years of working together," she and the Gagosian Gallery have "reached an amicable decision to end their partnership," according to The New York Times.

Her departure follows that of Damien Hirst, who also parted ways with Gagosian after 17 years, and Jeff Koons's announcement that he will have a show at David Zwirner this May. In a statement, Gagosian characterized Hirst's as an amicable departure, and the gallery is continuing its 10-year representation of Koons, according to Gagosian director Rebecca Sternthal.

Kusama's first solo show was held at New York's Gagosian gallery in 2009. Subsequently she has collaborated with Louis Vuitton and been honored with retrospectives at the Whitney and the Tate Modern in London. The artist will continue to work with Victoria Miro in London, and Ota Fine Arts in Tokyo and Singapore.
