With today's announcement of the acquisition of Conceptual art from two major sources—the Seth Siegelaub and the Stichting Egree Foundation and the Daled Collection of American and European Conceptual Art—the Museum of Modern Art has significantly expanded its holdings of 1960s and ‘70s work in that genre. Artists include Marcel Broodthaers, Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth and Daniel Buren. Both acquisitions were a combination of museum purchase and gifts from the collectors.
The American-born Siegelaub, a key supporter of Conceptual art, first opened his namesake New York gallery in 1964, at the age of 23. Following a 5-year stint as an independent curator, during which he organized 21 exhibitions and other projects, he left New York and the art world in 1972 to pursue other interests in Europe. His Stichting Egree Foundation, based in Amsterdam, promotes critical research in contemporary art theory and practice, as well delving into a wide range of other projects. Siegelaub's collection includes nearly 70 art works, as well as archival materials related to his curatorial career.
The Daled Collection, which contains 223 works in a variety of mediums, was assembled by Brussels-based collectors Herman J. Daled and Nicole Daled-Verstraeten between 1966 and 1978. It include some 60 works by Broodthaers, whose 1966 piece, Robe de Maria, the couple purchased—their first—the day the artist completed it. It was largely through Broodthaers's connections that the Daleds amassed their extensive holdings. Photos, letters, notes and other materials relating to their collection has also been acquired by the museum.
Forty works from the Daled Collection as well as a selection of pieces from the Siegelaub collection, will be on view in MoMA's painting and sculpture galleries, beginning June 22. Highlights will include major works by Broodthaers, Vito Acconci, James Lee Byars, Robert Barry and Douglas Huebler.
