MFA Boston's George Shackelford Heads to Kimbell

George Shackelford, chairman of European art and curator of modern art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, is leaving to become senior deputy director at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth.

He has been with the MFA for 15 years, joining the staff in 1996 as curator of European paintings. For 11 years prior to that he was curator of European painting and sculpture at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Among the exhibitions he has co-curated at the Boston MFA are "Monet in the 20th Century" (1998-99), "Impressionist Still Life" (2001–02) and "Gauguin Tahiti" (2003–04). His last show at the museum will be "Degas and the Nude," which will be on view Oct. 9, 2011–Feb. 5, 2012, before traveling to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Shackelford was made a Chevalier de l'ordre des arts et des letters by the Republic of France in 2005.
