Rubells Announce December Program

Each year, the Rubell Family Collection, the influential contemporary arts foundation based in Miami, showcases its recent acquisitions timed to Art Basel Miami Beach. This year, "American Exuberance" opens Nov. 30.

The show will include 190 works by 64 artists, and address what the Rubells refer to as the current "American condition." The Rubell's show this year favors big-name artists over emerging talent: the show includes such artists as Matthew Barney, Maurizio Cattelan, Wade Guyton, Keith Haring, Richard Prince, Cindy Sherman and Kelley Walker. Emerging artists include Brendan Fowler, Jacob Kassay and Phil Wagner.

In the show's catalogue, artist John Miller writes, "American exuberance is part myth and part reality. . . . Paradoxically, exuberance is linked to stagnation, entropy and ruin. Its efflorescence becomes mirage-like. For the artists, these conditions are materials."

A participatory exhibition by artist Jennifer Rubell, "Incubation," will open in the collection during breakfast hours. There Rubell will discuss the creation of life and art though the physical cultivation of yogurt, which will be prepared in the gallery.



"American Exuberance" is on view Nov. 30–July 27, 2012. "Incubation" runs Nov. 30–Dec. 4.
