Massimiliano Gioni Will Curate the 2013 Venice Biennale

Italian Massimiliano Gioni has been appointed director of the 2013 Venice Biennale. The seemingly omnipresent 39-year-old is associate director of the New Museum in New York and artistic director of the Fondazione Nicola Trussardi in Milan. He will maintain these responsibilities.

This won't be his first Venice outing. He curated the "La Zona" section of the international art exhibition in 2011 and a pavilion in the 2003 iteration under then-director Francesco Bonami. A veteran organizer of biennials, he previously curated the  itinerant European biennial Manifesta in 2004 and the 2006 Berlin Biennale. He was also the first European to oversee the Gwangju Art Biennal in South Korea, in 2010.

At the New Museum, he helped organize the first Generational Triennial, "Younger Than Jesus." He was responsible for the museum-wide Urs Fischer installation in 2009–10; last summer's "Ostalgia," a survey of artists from Eastern Europe; and the enormously popular current Carsten Höller extravaganza.
