Maccarone to Expand in West Village

New York dealer Michele Maccarone is expanding her West Village gallery.

Coinciding with her 10-year anniversary comes an expansion into a neighboring space in the same building at 630 Greenwich St. that will increase the already large gallery's square footage by about two-thirds.

Maccarone represents a slate of super-hip artists including Carol Bove, Hanna Liden and Nate Lowman.

"Something pretty major has happened every five years in our history," the gallery's Allison Rodman told A.i.A. by phone this morning. "It all started in an abandoned electronics store on Canal Street, with a banner that said ‘Kunst,'" which is the German word for art.

Five years later Maccarone moved to her current quarters, and now the gallery is taking over the entire block, renovating a space formerly occupied by a dry cleaner. Next door is Gavin Brown's enterprise, a gallery that represents influential figures like Elizabeth Peyton and Rirkrit Tiravanija, along with younger artists like Uri Aran and Kerstin Braetsch.

Maccarone recently added L.A.-based artists Edgar Arceneaux and Rodney McMillian to its roster. A site-specific installation by McMillian will be the first show in the new space.
