Dartmouth Names an Architect for Hood Museum Expansion

Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects of New York have been tapped to design a major expansion and renovation of the Hood Museum of Art at New Hampshire's Dartmouth College. The project will include enhanced galleries and classrooms.

This news comes less than a month after the announcement of a major gift from Leon and Debra Black for a new visual arts center.

Since the Hood opened in 1985, its holdings have grown by about half, from 47,000 objects to more than 70,000. The collection spans Native American, African and Melanesian art, European and American prints, paintings and sculpture, and modern and contemporary art. The Hood also collects recent Aboriginal Australian paintings.

The architects are also behind the new Barnes Foundation facility in Philadelphia, which opens next month, and New York's American Folk Art Museum building (2001), which was sold to MoMA in May.
