Johanna Burton to Join New Museum

Johanna Burton has been named director and curator of education and public engagement at New York's New Museum. Burton will oversee the museum's educational, interpretive and theater initiatives. She takes up her new post Jan. 2, 2013, succeeding Eungie Joo, who in July was appointed director of art and cultural programs at the Instituto Inhotim, a contemporary art museum set in a botanical garden in Minas Gerais, Brazil.

Burton is currently graduate program director at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., and was formerly associate director of the Whitney Independent Study Program in New York. Burton has curated or co-curated a number of exhibitions including "Sherrie Levine: Mayhem" at the Whitney Museum in 2011. She is currently working with Anne Ellegood on an exhibition about institutional critique and appropriation that will be at L.A.'s Hammer Museum in 2014.

Burton holds multiple master's degrees from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, New York University and Princeton University, where she is completing her doctorate in art history.
