Dorsey Waxter Appointed ADAA President

Dorsey Waxter has been elected president of the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA), effective Jan. 1, 2013. She will serve a three-year term. Waxter is a former director at New York's Greenberg Van Doren Gallery, and as of today, is a partner in the newly announced Van Doren Waxter Gallery, New York.

"What's most on my mind," Waxter told A.i.A. by phone today, "is to emphasize the critical role that galleries play in the art world. They are the conduit between artists and the audience. Doing exhibitions, writing catalogues and disseminating information about artists is critical to the art market."

Waxter succeeds Lucy Mitchell-Innes, co-owner of Mitchell-Innes & Nash Gallery, New York, who has served since 2009.

The ADAA is perhaps best known for the annual Art Show, which takes place at the Park Avenue Armory.

Waxter started out at Nancy Hoffman Gallery in 1974. In 1977 she moved to André Emmerich Gallery, where she remained for 15 years. She founded her own eponymous art consultancy in 1991, maintaining it until becoming director at Greenberg Van Doren in 1998.

She has been on the ADAA's board of directors since 2009, serving on the executive committee and chairing the public relations committee.

ADAA also appointed officers today, who will each serve a three-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2013. They are Mary Sabbatino, of Galerie Lelong, as vice president; Adam Sheffer, of Cheim & Read, as vice president; Laurence Shopmaker of Senior & Shopmaker Gallery as secretary; and Mark Brady of W.M. Brady & Co. as treasurer.
