Philadelphia Museum Makes Two Curatorial Appointments

The Philadelphia Museum of Art has appointed two new curators. Matthew Affron has been named the institution's curator of modern art, while Dirk H. Brieding comes aboard as associate curator of arms and armor.

Affron fills the vacancy left by Michael Taylor, who departed in 2011 to head Dartmouth College's Hood Museum. Brieding, meanwhile, is trading museums with Pierre Terjanian, who last year became the arms and armor curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where Brieding, an assistant curator, has worked since 2001.

Currently at the University of Virginia, Affron is a professor of art history as well as a curator of modern art at the school's Fralin Museum. Timothy Rub, director of the Philadelphia Museum, said in a press release, "Affron's commitment to scholarship as well as accessibility will enable us to utilize more fully an area of our collection that is known throughout the world for its scope, quality, and historical significance."

Affron is set to start the first of September, while Brieding will join the museum in early July.
