Over the past 20 years, New York-based photographer Arne Svenson has produced numerous series, among them images of convicted criminals printed from turn-of-the-century glass plate negatives ("Prisoners," 1997), studio portraits of stuffed animals ("Sock Monkeys," 2002) and portraits of children with autism ("About Face," 2011).

"Birthday" is the word that haunts the life and career of Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012). Not only is it the title of her 1986 memoir about her 34 years of marriage to Max Ernst and the life that they shared in Paris (1956-1979) and Sedona, Ariz.

Recently, Toronto dealer Jessica Bradley opened a second gallery in the city's industrial Junction neighborhood, a venue larger than her storefront on Dundas Street West. The seven abstract paintings and two site-specific sculptures comprising Julia Dault's first solo exhibition in Canada were served beautifully by the new space.

"Acedia," the title of Swiss photographer Olivier Richon's exhibition at Ibid Projects, describes a state of indolence, reverie and torpor.

Ahlam Shibli's first major retrospective, "Phantom Home," featured nine series of her documentary-style photographs, dating from 2000 to 2012. For Shibli, who was born in Galilee in 1970 and lives in Haifa, the concept of home is multilayered, encompassing one's family home, one's homeland and one's body.
