Thelma Golden, Michael Govan and Defne Ayas
Back for its fourth successive year, Savannah College of Art and Design's deFINE ART offered its most extensive program of exhibitions and talks to date. Shows at the SCAD Museum of Art and its many gallery spaces in Savannah featured work by an international group of artists—including Ingrid Calame, Odili Donald Odita, Angel Otero, Jennifer Rubell and Jack Whitten—as well as SCAD alumni Monica Cook, Jason Hackenwerth, and Marcus Kenney and prized M.F.A. students Honor Bowman and Will Penny. Two additional highlights of the week were the Museum Directors Panel with Thelma Golden, Michael Govan, Defne Ayas and the keynote address and film screening by 2013 deFINE ART honoree Shirin Neshat. "deFINE ART brings the most avant-garde artists, thinkers, and individuals that are currently defining contemporary art to SCAD," Laurie Ann Farrell, executive director of exhibitions at SCAD, told A.i.A. "This year was a shining example of the type of conversations and dialogues that we want to activate our museum, galleries, and classrooms."—Paul Laster
