One of Vienna's most power-punched art hubs, Schleifmühlgasse is a stretch of street that's home to five contemporary art galleries, which open their shows simultaneously. The galleries kicked off the New Year with solo, two-person, and group exhibitions by established and emerging artists. Georg Kargl BOX opened a clever installation of paired slideshows by Jan Mancuska, while next door's Georg Kargl Fine Arts continued a show of Clegg & Guttmann witty sculptures, installations, and photographs. Engholm Engelhorn Galerie offered Drago Persic's striking paintings of realistic objects on black fields and animated landscape photographs, shot at night. Christine König Galerie presented a posthumous tribute to artist couple Leon Golub and Nancy Spero. Gabriele Senn Galerie, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary on Schleifmühlgasse, assembled a group show to simulate the presentation of a private collection. Dedicated to photography, Galerie Momentum displayed Reiner Riedel's catchy color prints of surreal tourist attractions around the world. Meanwhile, a group show of emerging artists at Flat1, located on the next street, looked to show the appeal and potential of the next dynamic block.—Paul Laster
