Adam Szymczyk Named Documenta 14 Artistic Director

Adam Szymczyk has been named the artistic director of Documenta 14, which is scheduled to take place in Kassel, Germany, from June 10-Sept. 17, 2017. Founded in 1955 and taking place every five years, Documenta is one of the highest-profile international contemporary art exhibitions. Last year’s acclaimed Documenta 13 was organized by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev.

Since 2003, Szymczyk has been director and chief curator at Kunsthalle Basel, where he has organized exhibitions of artists including Paul Sietsema and Adriana Lara (both 2012), Sung Hwan Kim (2011), Moyra Davey (2010) and Danh Vo (2009), among others. In 2011 he was awarded the Walter Hopps Award for Curatorial Achievement at the Menil Foundation in Houston. With Elena Filipovic, he co-curated the 5th Berlin Biennial (2008). He co-founded the Foksal Gallery Foundation in Warsaw, where he served as curator from 1997 to 2003.

“I am convinced that his Documenta will add another chapter to our appreciation and our experience of contemporary art,” said Koyo Kouoh, independent curator and speaker for the search committee, in a press release.
