Change at the Helm of the New-York Historical Society

The New-York Historical Society has announced that after eight years of service, vice president and director of the museum division, Linda S. Ferber, will resign from her position on Jan. 1, 2014. Taking over her role will be curator and art historian Brian T. Allen, currently director of the Addison Gallery of American Art in Andover, Mass.

Allen has been director of the Addison since 2004. Under his leadership, the gallery raised over $40 million for renovation and construction purposes and expanded its collection by a third.

Ferber, a historian of American art who was hired in 2005, will remain with the museum as a senior art historian and continue to conduct research and write about the institution’s collection. In a press release, Pam Schafler, vice chairman of the board and chair of the chairman’s council, spoke of Ferber’s “superb scholarship and contagious enthusiasm,” promising that “Brian Allen embraces this legacy and is well poised to lead our next stage of development.”
