In a First Look profile for our January issue, Dana Kopel discusses how performance artist keyon gaskin “critiques the racialized and gendered power structures that underpin the contemporary art system.” In particular, gaskin foregrounds the audience-performer dynamic, often wandering the theater foyer and inviting people on stage. They premiered [a swatch of lavender] at this year’s American Realness festival (Jan. 9–16). As Kopel notes, gaskin prefers not to contextualize their work with a detailed biography. The artist’s playlist for A.i.A.’s YouTube channel, which addresses issues of race, nostalgia, and refusal, is characteristically taciturn. —Eds.
