The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami has hired New York-based independent curator, writer and editor Alex Gartenfeld in the newly created position of curator. Gartenfeld is currently senior editor of A.i.A. and Interview magazine online. He will assume his new post in May, reporting to Bonnie Clearwater, who, in addition to being the museum’s director, also serves as chief curator.
“Alex has already made an impact on the art world as a curator, writer and editor,” said Kira Flanzraich, chairman of the museum’s board of trustees. “As MOCA’s influence and impact continues to grow, Alex’s hire will further strengthen our role in the arts community internationally, nationally, and in the South Florida community.”
Gartenfeld is currently working with curator Sir Norman Rosenthal on the exhibition “Empire State,” which opens at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, in Rome, in April, and will include artists such as Dan Graham, Adrian Piper, Wade Guyton and Joyce Pensato. His exhibition “Black Cake” closed this weekend at both locations of New York’s Team Gallery, featuring Cecily Brown, Ryan McGinley and Sterling Ruby, among others.
Gartenfeld has also cofounded two exhibition spaces, Three’s Company and West Street Gallery, along with curating numerous other exhibitions and writing for A.i.A. and Interview.
