Regine Basha has been named executive director of Artpace in San Antonio, effective Mar. 1. Founded by the late Linda Pace, daughter of the Pace picante sauce company founders, Artpace has a robust exhibition and international residency program, attracting such artists as Maurizio Cattelan, Wangechi Mutu, Christian Jankowski and Cornelia Parker.
An independent curator, scholar and A.i.A. contributor, Basha was adjunct curator and consultant for Arthouse at the Jones Center in Austin from 2002 to ’07. There she launched a residency program and oversaw the first Arthouse Texas Prize, a $30,000 award now given triennially to a Texas artist. Prior to that she was cultural affairs officer for the Canadian Consulate in New York and director of the Art Gallery of the Saidye Bronfman Centre (1991–1995) in Montreal.
Basha also co-founded the web-based organizations fluentcollab.org, which hosts an e-journal and actual exhibition space, and grackleworld.org, a database of exhibitions available for tour. Basha is curating the upcoming Paul Pfeiffer exhibition [Sept. 16, 2012–Jan. 22, 2013] at the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin.
