SFMOMA Acquires Marquee Moderns

Nine Bay Area collectors have pledged some 195 works of modern and contemporary art to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, as the museum embarks on a major expansion. The promised gift includes works by Francis Bacon, Brice Marden, Jackson Pollock and Eva Hesse.

Museum patrons Helen Schwab and Robin Wright chaired a committee behind the gift, which includes trustees Mimi Haas and Norman Stone. The gift includes a group of 30 sculptures and works on paper by Joseph Beuys as well as twelve pieces by Bruce Nauman.

The museum has been on an acqusition spree. SFMOMA received a gift of 1,100 works from the Fisher Collection in 2009. The late Donald Fisher, a founder of Gap Inc., had initially sought to open his own museum in the Presidio. He bequeathed his collection to SFMOMA shortly before his death in September 2009. The museum’s collection contains 27,000 objects.

The promised gift launches the public phase of SFMOMA’s collections campaign, which was initiated in 2009. The campaign will continue through the scheduled opening of its expanded facility, designed by the Norwegian firm Snohetta, in 2016.
